Most website owners will use pay per click programs to generate traffic to their website. Many do not realize there are other choices beyond Google Adwords.

Nothing should ever replace wording your site correctly and building a search friendly site from within but using Pay Per Click programs can guarantee you traffic. The problem is Cost and Sales Conversion - which is vital

2 Main PPC Providers: Adwords and Adcenter

Most site owners use Google Adwords as they either heard of it or saw the ads appear on Google's search engine. Since Google is more used than microsoft's Bing (where adcenter ads appear), that makes sense.

Microsoft Ad Center vs. Google Adwords Traffic

While proper and true Search Engine Optimization - SEO is the key to long term free website traffic, most website owners (rightly) will use pay per click programs. Most default to Adwords but Microsoft's program is gaining popularity to assist a website with more traffic - in addition to the visitors it gets via traditional SEO.

I personally have found the Adcenter program easier to work with and less strict on the landing page and ad approval process. The landing page is the page that the user goes to when clicking your paid ad. Last year Google started re-evaluating landing pages and disapproving many of my pages and my customer's pages as "poor" content - when previously they were approved fine. This resulted in less clicks and less traffic.

Cost and bidding for adwords and adcenter

While Google adwords gives more exposure since their search engine is still more popular - it is more expensive. More competition and more costly bidding. Microsoft's adcenter cost and bidding provides a good balance in ad campaigns for my websites and the clients I work with. I get good traffic from both, but the cost of adwords has forced me to ease back a little.

I also find Ad center's user interface and campaign management easier to work with vs. Google adwords.

Consider the Adcenter option. The set up is free and you can set your budgets low to start. I think you will find it easier to work with than Adwords and save some money as well.

Our last few Search Engine Tip newsletters have dealt with core content and site structure (most important) and we will be doing a lot more there going forward (how to write proper copy etc.) Those past newsletters are on our SEO Blog or on our main Nick's SEO World Website. Save them and use them as you need. The blog allows for commenting.

Social Media - Social Media and more Social Media..... That's all we hear right? Join in on forums, create blogs,Facebook, Twitter, Linked in and more. These can all be useful and have been or will be addressed in future SEO tip letters.3 main things you get when you use social media properly: Branding, back links to your website and strategic partnerships. Problem is - Many website owners try to do a little of them all and not truly work what each one can do for you and then get frustrated.

Too many social media sites for too many uses to squeeze in on one SEO Tip Letter. I consider social media as SEM (search engine marketing) as opposed to SEO (search engine optimization). The latter is the correct structure of your site so it is "optimized" for a high ranking based on what is in the site itself - your content. SEM is your external marketing.

TOPIC: Linked in

Linked in is one of my favorite sites for self promotion, website traffic, alliances and more. Now, most of you have heard of it. Most may even be on it....but are you REALLY using it. A few subscribers to my list asked me to address social media and in particular - linked in and getting the most out of it..

Linked in is a site that allows you to "connect" with other professionals and profile yourself and business. I happen to love it and
one I concentrate on. Tips for SEO/SEM on linked in are:

#1 Join it - if you haven't already

#2 Find people you know first and send a connection request

#3 Connect with as many people as you can (I accept 90% of the requests I get). It kinda snowballs after a while. "...and he told 2 friends and he told 2 friends and so on...and so on...." It's not like FB where you feel you have to be buddies. This is businesss! I say request out and accept in as much as you can.

#4 Join a group. There are dozens of groups that you can join within linked in. These are really good for not only making connections, but for driving traffic, as Linked In is a very high ranking Google site, so any comment you make or topic you discuss or even create has a good shot at being ranked on Google and showing up. Not to mention your inbox may deliver some business to you from another group member who
either liked your post or could use your service.

Example: You join a group "e marketers", (which is a real group and I am in it btw) and there is a topic discussing "web design" (assuming that's your business), your reply could be worded SEO friendly for your self, while adding good conversation to the discussion. Example of what you could write could be: "In my website design business in Pittsburgh, we see customers who....." and so on. That sentence, because it's worded SEO friendly and it is on a very popoular site that is indexed every day, if not several times a day by Google - could give you a big lift if someone types in "Web Designer Pittsburgh". Plus, Linked in allows you to have a link to your site on your replies and allowed in most groups.

5. Join a group with a lot of members to start. Some have 40, some have 9,000 members. Go big and you'll be seen more, plus there are more active discussions going on in popular groups which is is better for Google ranking for you and a higher chance to gain customers via
networking.

Work it

Like all social media - don't just join linked in, twitter or make a company Facebook page. Truly work them. Social media and Internet groups will only work if you concentrate on each one and if you are just working for yourself, joining 10 social media sites will do little. Use Linked in, Facebook and Twitter to start or any 2 or 3 you are comfortable with that have a lot of members - and I'm talking millions. Go with the most popular first. More visitors to those sites, the more eyeballs on yours!

Today's Tip Comes From a Question: How Many Pages Are On Your Site?
Did you know that there are a certain number of pages that Google likes
to see of real content on a website? It's true. Websites that are built
with 5 or 6 pages that maybe link to just catalog pages to order products,
or just image based pages with no written contentare considered weak.
I find 10 pages of content and higher with links as
keywords can do wonders for listing higher on Google.

Many of my clients will ask me why their site is not ranking higher
if they have most or all of the other proper SEO aspects in place

Good fresh content
Proper titles
Bolding before paragraphs
Linking
200-300 words of content on their main page

....and other areas of SEO that I have written in passed newsletters.

Well back to the question re: if the site only has 3 or 4 pages (or even under 10),
it needs more.

A great page that can get indexed very strong on Google is a "Frequently Asked
Questions" page. It's a great page for SEO, because you are putting in
questions that people search (sometimes word for word) into search engines,
and many topics can be covered. You also can build the page where it is
FULL of content. Write the Q's keywords Ex: Q:"When is online credit
card machine going to be set up?" A: "Your online credit processor
should be set up on your website with in 48 hours"
THIS is great Google content, with keywords and gives you an extra page.

News, About Us, Side Products and Services, Affiliates are just some other
pages you can add to get that extra hit. Remember - A site that is best
optimized is the one where the hits go to the most relevant page on your site
- not the home page. Conversion is high also.

Link Strategy

I am very skeptical about companies that offer to put my site our for link swapping to generate "popularity" for search engine SEO purposes. Personally, I feel it is a waste of money and could hurt you. If there are links being exchanged artificially with companies outside of your industry, search engines can punish you for it.

There are enough websites looking to gain popularity themselves in a similar industry to you. Once your site is optimized correctly, the links will come to you. You also can create your own links. Go to free classified or posting sites and put your url whenever it is appropriate. This can be a very effective strategy, especially if the site you are posting on is a popular site. These links are indexed and read. When you make a new page - market it yourself.

If your website is not search engine optimized, you do not have to feel overwhelmed. There are reputable professionals out there. You also can slowly bring your site around. Changing one page to test the SEO of a certain term or phrase would be a good strategy. Type in some exact words from that page into a search engine and then type a little less, and less to see how well your site is ranked on the terms you really want.

One of the biggest mistakes I see on websites is when a site does
not mention their town and state on their site enough. Sounds obvious
right? We all have a "contact us" page, but many just have a form
with a request for information. This can still be there but it does
not help for SEO reasons if your company name and location are not
written out in text.

If you are a Landscaping Company in Lansing Michigan. Put in
Prestige Landscaping, Lansing Michigan - A Lansing Lawn maintenance
Company. Reads like good search engine optimization? It is!

Even in your copy on your home page or an "about us" page, get your
location in there too. "We here at Top Notch Auto Body in Brooklyn
New York...." It helps for SEO, Getting listed in local directories
and even if you say to yourself, "well, I sell to the whole country
or world", it still helps. Perhaps a local business wants to align
with you and is looking for a local company?

Lastly, there is less competition on search results for "Detroit
Printing Company" vs. "Printing Company. Use that same strategy
if doing pay per click programs and paying for keywords. You'll
see a difference!

Classified Ad Posting

[this was a recent piece I had published on a popular article site]

I use several tools when promoting my websites - as many of you do as well. However, while all the talk is social media, blogs, SEO and more (and those are all important) - one of the best tools you can use is a free classified ad posting site... all free.

We all know Craigslist and some others, but I find them limiting personally and don't you hate that "code" that you can barely read as you try to figure out the letters to put in the box? I know it's an anti spam thing to limit classified ad posts but Craigslist also limits the posts per day and if you have more than a few things to promote - that's annoying too. Plus they make you pay for job ads. But I'm not writing this to bash them. Online classified ad posting is a good thing and there are good ones.

Linking

One of the main reasons why I post and use free classified ad sites is for the linking to my product, affiliate and/or website. The best ad sites allow you to write a nice size ad and let you place a link in the ad. A phone number or address doesn't work great for me if I'm in New York and the visitor is from Miami Austin Charlotte Cleveland etc. I want them to read the ad and click the link. I also want Google to read that link coming from a piece that is on topic to my niche. I should also note that I am a Search Engine Optimization Consultant. So, I've tried it all and linking through ads works.

Google Ranking With Classified Ad sites

Here's the cool part with using the right classified ad site for posting. If you write the ad well with keywords, the ad itself will show up on Google or Yahoo etc. I'm not just playing for the people on the ad site itself. I'm writing ads on a classified ad site that shows up on Google and gives me a visitor.

Optimizing An Online Ad

The first thing you want to do is create a short title with your keywords in it. Let's assume I am a plumber in Chicago and I am looking for business and hits to my website (if I have one). I advise not to just put "plumber for hire" or even worse "plumber". While I may get hits and views from the people on that particular online classified posting site, what I'm really looking for is a good Google ranking for the ad itself. A better title for search engine optimization would be "Chicago Plumber For Hire". This way, someone in the Chicago area can find a local person (hopefully them) through a Google search, without even being on that classified ad site.

2nd thing is to write at least a paragraph. Google hates one sentence or 2 ads of copy. Search yourself and you'll see that full copy is what they like. So, you want your ad to be of decent length, have your keywords -yet read well to the reader. Not just gibberish. This also goes for blogging.

Linking With A Classified Ad Post

This is most important and I won't lie - I have my own successful free classified ad website (it is in my bio) that charges nothing and goes for 120 days an ad and lets you post to 3 categories. BUT, I made sure my customers can link to their site without limitation. It is also SEO friendly, so if you word your ad correctly, you could very well see your ad on Google for 4 months. Linking is huge. You can then copy the ad on other sites as long as they allow the following features that my site and others do and you don't repeat the same exact ad on the same site. Just mix it up. I want your ad noticed and keep posting.

Hello all. Not all affiliate programs have to be technical or even automated. Simply developing relationships with common businesses where you "share" in contacts and inquires can result in great exposure and sales for you.

Start by setting up a form on your site where people can put in their information where one of your partners can earn from it. If it is a service you do not provide directly, offer it anyway! Someone can use it and you can split the revenue. It's a great way to earn extra money by giving leads to others. If a form doesn't work for you, offer an email and forward the email to someone and split the money!

One of the topics I'm asked most about is how to promote yourself and/or your business using social media sites ( Facebook Twitter Linked In etc ).

Many people make the mistake of joining and trying to market to 5 or 10 social media sites or simply just "join" and not truly work the site for what it can do for you. Without people following you and conversing with you (building relationships), these sites will have little value to you or your business. Most of these sites have "no follow" or indirect linking, so the links do little for search ranking.

SEO Strategy

Developing a true Internet strategy for search engine purposes does not have to happen at all at once. Optimizing your site for true search traffic is always goal #1. Any other campaigns, whether it is pay per click programs or using outside linking services, etc. won't matter if the site itself is not optimized properly. Let me be clear - those other options or strategies may help, but you are making it much harder on yourself if you do not set your site up for true, clean traffic. It just makes everything else easier.

The biggest mistake I see sites make is they word their site to terms that they are familiar with or that are used within their industry or they just don't think about. One example would be a moving company putting "local moving" as a link and with text geared to local moving. Now, if I am in Cleveland and I am looking for a moving company, I'm not typing in "local moving". I'm typing in "Cleveland Moving Company" or something like that.

Your search engine strategy must begin with links and headers that are typed into search engines. You should join Google adwords to get an idea on what terms are searched the most in your industry. A correct SEO strategy begins with building your site naturally. Everything else that is available to you will become easier. Affiliates will come to you as your page rises. You will get link and partnership offers as your search engine ranking improves. They will come to you or at least when you go to other sites, you can show them your high ranked website.

Google Strategy

Google is the best search engine in the world. Why? Because it rewards good sites with good content and popularity. The best thing about Google is once you are listed well with them, the other search engines will follow and index you. One strategy to get listed on Google without submitting directly to them (you should do that anyway), is to get a website to link to you right away. When Google spiders my sites, they catch the inbound and outbound links. So, when we launch a new site - we simply have our other sites link to it.

Google loves new content, so update often.

Yahoo and Bing

These search engines tend to be easier to get ranked high using basic SEO strategies like proper link titling, good first paragraph and full text. Link popularity and other factors tend to be less with them. That can be good or bad, depending on whether you are established or a newcomer. New sites can show up there quicker.

DO NOT have companies submit your website to "hundreds or thousands of search engines" for a fee. Do they actually do this? Probably (I hope), but that's not the point. There are not hundreds of search engines. There are only a few. For me, I only optimize for Google, Yahoo and MSN. All the others spider or copy from those. If you are an international company, a good strategy may be to list in the directory of Google France or wherever. Don't use outside companies. That is just my opinion. When you are listed well on Google, everything else will fall into place.

Link Strategy

I am very skeptical about companies that offer to put my site our for link swapping to generate "popularity" for search engine SEO purposes. Personally, I feel it is a waste of money and could hurt you. If there are links being exchanged artificially with companies outside of your industry, search engines can punish you for it.

There are enough websites looking to gain popularity themselves in a similar industry to you. Once your site is optimized correctly, the links will come to you. You also can create your own links. Go to free classified or posting sites and put your url whenever it is appropriate. This can be a very effective strategy, especially if the site you are posting on is a popular site. These links are indexed and read. When you make a new page - market it yourself.

If your website is not search engine optimized, you do not have to feel overwhelmed. There are reputable professionals out there. You also can slowly bring your site around. Changing one page to test the SEO of a certain term or phrase would be a good strategy. Type in some exact words from that page into a search engine and then type a little less, and less to see how well your site is ranked on the terms you really want.

I tend to look at websites as being limitless in their performance. Not building a site with search engine strategies in mind is a mistake, but it can be easily corrected. Good HTML Page Title Format

An indication of poor search engine ranking for a particular page or even the whole site can come down to HTML titles. These are the title tags that are written when the site is created, but they can be changed and for most sites - they should be.

What are these tags?

The HTML browser title is the title or words you see when you are searching on Google or other search engine. The results that appear will have a summary title that is a link. It's usually in blue and it is what you would click when you want to visit that site from the search results page. It is also the phrase or groups of words you see at the top of your window browser when you are actually on the site. It is not on the website itself or in the body. The browser title is meant to tell the search engines what the page on your site is about. It is incredibly misused or even ignored by website owners and webmasters. Yes - I have literally seen websites on the Internet that have "Home Page" as their main title or even worse, "Page 1" 'Page 2". It's terrible.

If you view the source code of a website (the actual script language in notepad), you will see tags like this

title: Katie's Flower Baskets Home Page. That is actually a bad home page HTML title. It is readable on the site though.

When the website is created, each page is set up as their own entity or should be. The website pages that rank well are the ones who match their content (which is important as well of course) with proper HTML browser titles so the search engines can get a clearer picture of what the site is about. It is most important to learn and understand that each page should have it's own unique HTML title that is specific to the page itself.

A major mistake I see with many websites is they treat the page title like it is a place for a slogan or keyword stuffing. Slogans and full sentence descriptions should not be used. Conjunctions (and, or etc) should not be used either.

Bad title example: "Islandlandscaping.com - We provide the best prices and services for residential and commercial property customers. Our work is guaranteed!"

That is a bad title on several fronts.

One problem is using the name in a dot.com on the page title tag. That is not really necessary and if someone searches just "Island Landscaping", it may not even come up, because you have meshed it as a url and not the proper name.

The second problem is the use of conjunctions. These are used to create long sentences and slogans here and are not effective. These sentences can be used on the website itself of course and in the meta tag descriptions, but it is not the proper format for an HTML title.

The 3rd issue with this home page title is there is wasted space where real keywords aren't used.

Better HTML title tag: "Island Landscaping Service - New Jersey Landscaper, NJ Lawn Maintenance Company"

You don't want to repeat a keyword too much on the title tag. You also want to be as geo-relevant as possible. If your business is locally based or focused locally.

Website SEO is a process that involves many aspects of proper page creation and marketing. The HTML title is one component. However, it can be a crucial area. Best of luck!

Important factors I can confirm (though Google does not provide 100% how they set their rankings):

Websites that:

Have been registered and online longer rank higher - New sites have to be patient. Google rarely ranks a site "right out of the gate" 3-6 months normally

Have more pages - Yes! This doesn't mean it has to be 300 pages - but 5 page websites or less are a problem. Always make more pages!

Inbound links - websites linking to you. Not just any websites though. Sites that are considered "within niche or market". Hundreds of links coming from some 3rd party link building companies could actually LOWER your ranking

New and fresh content - Updating your site, at least monthly helps improve ranking and also allows Google to update your site.

Meta Tags - Good to have but Google pays little attention to these. I have several VERY high ranking sites that have no meta tags at all.

Proper Search Engine Optimization - Well of course! Titles, phrasing and using many of the techniques I use with my customers and what you will find in my SEO letters.

Every Website has certain pages and services that are MORE important and/or MORE profitable to the website owner. I hear it all the time.

"Nick we REALLY want to promote the Deck Installation Part of our Landscape Design Service! Can we Promote that page more through SEO?"

YES!!!

Now of course there are limitations to the type of service and competition and many other aspects to SEO that my readers have learned already and will continue to that brings this all together. Search Engine Marketing and Optimization is a long term learning process and these tips are meant to be used together with EVERYTHING (well almost!) you have hopefully learned with me and my partner affiliates with courses and products to back it up. Ok - where were we? :)

Google and other search engines DO value the amount of links YOU have on your own site pointing to that page. It's called "internal linking". That just means how many time your site links to that page within itself (not what is linking from the outside) If you have a text link or image link (image links are usually a no-no but you can still have them and be fine - future topic???) Stay on my list!

USING THE HOME PAGE THROUGH TEXT LINKING

Ok - so point being is Google is seeing all of your links and if a page is only linked from the home page, it could be ignored. Also - put a keyword phrase and make it a link on your home page to THAT page YOU REALLY want hittin'. EDIT YOUR HOME PAGE INITIAL TEXT.

Ex: Boston All Star Landscaping is running a special on our Outside Deck Installation [make sure you make the phrase a link - Google LOVES that].........
Oh and that's a fake blue link - so don't click THAT :)

Any page that someone clicks on your site should have a link to the page you want the most visibility on. So, using our "Landscape Design Service" example. every time I click the "Mason and Brick Installation" page, or "Backyard Waterfall", I should see a link somewhere (best to have it at the top and bottom) for every page - but ESPECIALLY the new page you want promoted most!

A question I get dozens of times a week. Hey Nick - How do I optimize my website? How do these other sites get on page 1 of Google? Many of them my competitors. Pay Per Click Adwords is killing me! - yes I know. Paying for traffic you already got and feel like you never earned a profit from it. It's frustrating!

The truth is - when a website is optimized SEO for Google someone either did it for them or someone showed THEM how to SEO. Hello again friends!

Wow - I love this subject and it is such a great tool. I have been writing articles for myself and clients for several years and they REALLY can work and go a long long way for you. If you write up a good article - the right way, your article will be reproduced and copied on other sites (you want that!), it can show on Google search results for years - we REALLY want THAT! and you can place links to your website within an author bio area that can also have your phone number! oh and this is all FREE. NEVER pay to place an article. Well - I hate saying "NEVER" but don't.

Article sites don't charge and there is a reason for that. They want YOUR content. More content gives websites more relevance and that can increase their advertising by having more targeted visitors.

Example: Someone writes an article about the best flat screen TV's. That article site may have Google ads around your article or links to Amazon selling a 50 inch TV. That could be YOUR article that got the traffic. As long as your link back to you is intact - let every website use it!

Ok - so writing articles has no downside? No. There is no downside.

The only sort of downside is getting less exposure than others if the article is not written well for Google or the topic wasn't interesting enough to get circulated. Write a good article and you'll see it go a long way for you. I have some articles that are 6 years old and still pop on Google results! FREE PROMOTION. I have also gotten calls and emails from other businesses and got B2B relationships out of them.

Ok - so what to write about?

First off. Be in the mood! The best articles you will write will be ones that you felt passion for or creative. We all have our creative moments and non creative days. An insurance broker could write about ways to defer income into life insurance or a computer programmer could write about a new programming language, a bakery owner posting a muffin recipe. Whatever! If it's interesting, has readers and is written well - people WILL see it and you WILL get website traffic from it over time and if it's REALLY good, it will rank on Google by itself.

SOME POINTS:

Write about a topic you really know
Have keywords in front of you that you want to get in
Make it interesting to read
Do not commercialize yourself in the body of the article
Let the topic attract the readers and leave your bio at the bottom to get your promotion and link line
Have it the right length (500-700 words)
Make Paragraph Breaks
Write a nice but brief author bio with a mention and link to your website
Put it on the best article sites that get TRAFFIC and are ranked high on Google (ezinearticles.com and goarticles.com are my favorites and I have found other little sites will copy from them so let those sites do your work)

Don't waste time putting them on sites with no traffic or content. Also the more popular article sites will give the link back to you more Relevance in Google's eyes. How do you know a popular article site? Just type in a topic within their site and see what comes up. "How to grow Great Tomatoes" or anything. If 1 gardening article shows up - forget it. Start with Ezine articles. I have no affiliation! but they are a VERY popular site with Google and small sites grab their content a lot! Remember we want THAT! Steal away - it's just your name, company and website in more places!

Going to article sites and searching topics will also give you great ideas. "Why did THIS article come up first?" Was it the the title, the keywords, a great topic. Steal concepts all you want! Remember that the article is the topic - not you.

I will be writing more on this topic in future weeks as there is a lot to learn, but that should hopefully give you all a good start . When in the mood.....write!

BRIEF TOPIC TODAY (but important!)

How to get a page you created or edited for your website read and ranked by Google fast!

When you are adding a new page to your website or editing content - there is a way to force Google to read it that the same day. There are many popular websites out there that Google updates every day - if not every hour sometimes. Sites like Facebook, Craig's List, Backpage. Your site is naturally not as popular, so Google may not read it for a week or more. The easiest way to beat this is to create a free ad on backpage.com or craig's list - just to pick 2. These are the most popular free ad sites. Write a little ad about your website in the services section and put a link to the page you just edited or added. I prefer Backpage because your ad will normally stay active longer - 30 days. When Google updates the site you placed your ad on - the search engine will follow all the links and update them - including yours now! Link to the new page - not just your home page. Although your whole site will be re-read again also, which is great!

Make sure you title the page right also! (but that's for another day)! This can work for any new content including an article, resume or anything else you want and even if the content is on another website. Write the ad more than 4 sentences with keywords and Google may even index your ad on THEIR search results too!
